Overview of the study sample. CAM (Inouye, 1994) was used to screen for delirium. Each patient was screened six times during the first 48 hours. Delirium was considered present if the patients had acute onset of fluctuations in mental status and inattention, in addition to disorganized thinking and/or altered level of consciousness at one or more of the screenings.
